Art Direction Brand Extension Website

TAGV — Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente stands as the only Portuguese Academic Theatre. With a tradition of almost 60 years of cultural history, it offers the city of Coimbra a refined selection of theatre, dance, music and cinema. TAGV’s website is its latest communication tool and serves locals and visitors with an information media hub showcasing all its events.

With a deep typographical approach, the website design follows a deep-rooted legacy unique to its printed materials.

The Website

Showcasing a deep typographical approach, the website design follows the deep-rooted legacy of TAGV’s printed materials and features a generously sized sans/serif pairing that allows for a clear distinction of events.

The Homepage features a flexible header promoting highlight events across the various seasons, each echoing its treatment in the physical brochures via transposition of their unique color schemes. TAGV’s logo is actually responsive in print (stamp foiled over color paper), so we had to take a step further in the digital environment by having the 4 letters that compose it spread across the visible area.

Custom views

The Cultural Agenda features 3 complementary visualisation modes: first, a purely typographical approach with lavish type over the events names and images on hover, a direct transposition of the graphic language used in print; secondly, a thumbnails grid to serve older machines and less design-savvy users; and, finally, a type only grid index with images on hover for the more adventurous and experimental design lovers such as yourself ;). The website also plays a nifty little trick of learning how each user navigates its content, serving them their preferred view mode over the next visits.
